Summary

A book full of beautiful views and deftly written gems 。。。 observations on life still applicable 100+ years later。

Until the last few pages I honestly had no idea what Lucy or George were feeling。 I never got any sense of obvious attraction or either of them being particularly drawn to one another。 I liked the feminist stance though and am a big fan of Forster’s work。

i loved it!! it was so good! (much easier to understand after i watched the film and knew which character was which)

4。5-5。 This book really surprised me。 A woman’s coming of age story at the turn of the twentieth century。。 I wasn’t expecting a lot of the themes explored here and I loved Lucy’s growth。 Also, there are many great quotes。

I mean, it was easy and fast to read so it’s not one star。。。

There was quite a bit of chatter among the characters early on which was not particularly interesting to me。 But the story picked up nicely。A good author will write a character, not merely willy-nilly, but according to the precepts of some archetype he has chosen for the personality。 That is where all the art is。 But a truly excellent author like Forster will prevent that archetype from all-encompassing, and will allow his characters to still be richly three-dimensional。。。 and surprising。

This was a strange book。It’s romantic but also analyzes romanticism。 Mind you I’m no English major but that’s what I got from it。 The conversations on art made me laugh because Europeans or like White people in general in this era gave Art and artists such importance in a way that feels foreign from what I’m used to as an Indian girl always taught that such things were a waste of time。Overall an enjoyable read that I can’t wait to discuss with my friends and I can’t wait to watch the movie!

this was a fun read for the beginning of summer! however i do feel like a lot of the writing goes above my head because of how grounded in social niceties and customs of the time it is。。。。。 which is not bad per se but i feel i miss out on a lot of the impact of the societal critique (or even just other aspects to the story)。 i also just don’t like the way forster writes。。。。 sorry bae but 3/5 is actually very good bc i genuinely hated howard’s end so um。 Yeah 🧍

i loved it。 sense and sensibility vibes。 a perfect summer read。 lucy and george were socialist feminist icons。 the writing and nature descriptions particularly were beautiful as well

Very quotable, dry humor which is my favorite kind。 A discerning, comical look into human behavior as applied to the British middle/upper class in the mid 19th century。 Would read again, if only to make note of the amusingly sharp observations。

This was fine。 Better than Howards End, in my opinion。 I still didn't like hardly any of the characters, but at least I understood the motivations of the main protagonist。 This time Forster spent more time on the characters and less time commentating on social conventions, although there was still plenty of that。 Again, good British literature。 Also, I enjoyed the depictions of Florence and Tuscany。 It made me want to go back。 This was fine。 Better than Howards End, in my opinion。 I still didn't like hardly any of the characters, but at least I understood the motivations of the main protagonist。 This time Forster spent more time on the characters and less time commentating on social conventions, although there was still plenty of that。 Again, good British literature。 Also, I enjoyed the depictions of Florence and Tuscany。 It made me want to go back。 。。。more

Loved this! E。 M。 Forster is one of my favourite authors and so I knew I'd love this one and I was right。 Deceptively romantic storry with some hardhitting quotes in the last quarter。 Will definitely reread and annotate。 This is a new classic favourite I think。 Loved this! I've decided that I'm going to DNF this。 The absolute main reason being is that I have absolutely no clue what is going on。 It's really confusing for me to follow and I really have no will to power through it。 Another thing being is that I already don't like period romances。 They just not that appealing to me and this was no exception。 I'm also coming to this conclusion rather late because of personal struggles and mental health。 Let's choose the next book then。 I've decided that I'm going to DNF this。 The absolute main reason being is that I have absolutely no clue what is going on。 It's really confusing for me to follow and I really have no will to power through it。 Another thing being is that I already don't like period romances。 They just not that appealing to me and this was no exception。 I'm also coming to this conclusion rather late because of personal struggles and mental health。 Let's choose the next book then。 。。。more

Re-read & still love!Critiques:- A little Shakespearean comedy in its ending “tying things up in a bow” but are they really tied?- Leaves one wondering if Forster was making a point with his ending (the mock perfect ending) or if he honestly got a bit bored and peaced out! I, lowly reader, cannot tell - Also, I admit I’ve only read “Maurice” of Forster’s other works and that just was a bit more exciting because maybe he honestly doesn’t write women very well???

"Life is easy to chronicle, but bewildering to practice。 " - A quotable phrase and in this book, a slice of Lucy's life has been chronicled for us to sigh, laugh, ruminate and worry over as she becomes more self-aware and courageous。 Now, I wasn't expecting A Room with a View to be as romantic as it was but I was pleasantly surprised。 I do prefer the Austenian leading man archetype - intelligent, aloof, stoic, honest (somewhat brusque), sincere and ultimately willing to improve himself, someone "Life is easy to chronicle, but bewildering to practice。 " - A quotable phrase and in this book, a slice of Lucy's life has been chronicled for us to sigh, laugh, ruminate and worry over as she becomes more self-aware and courageous。 Now, I wasn't expecting A Room with a View to be as romantic as it was but I was pleasantly surprised。 I do prefer the Austenian leading man archetype - intelligent, aloof, stoic, honest (somewhat brusque), sincere and ultimately willing to improve himself, someone the heroine respects immensely and can look up to almost as a mentor。 However, George Emerson was exceedingly endearing with his blundering ways and sometimes melodramatic nature。 The interaction between our protagonists is limited - but the superb observations and witticisms tell the reader everything that is unsaid between them。 While my teenage self would have been elated with the sappy ending, my older jaded self saw it as one of the few flaws in an otherwise invigorating story。 When it comes to summing up human nature and personality traits succinctly with scathing humour - E。M。 Forster is peerless。 "Miss Bartlett assumed her favourite role, that of the prematurely aged martyr - there was no need for blathering paragraphs to explain her behaviour, upbringing and status, this one phrase said it all。 Similarly, Forster's opening lines about Cecil Vyse "He remained in the grip of a certain devil whom the modern world knows as self-consciousness, and whom the medieval, with dimmer vision, worshipped as asceticism。 " not only gave away his pretentious comportment but also the disdain the more modern Edwardian folks felt about their previous generations。 I adored the social commentary wrapped up in this light-hearted story of young Lucy finding her way to true love and freedom。 Undoubtedly, the lives of women in the Edwardian era was nothing to be envious of - always treated as less than equal and as the author puts it "Their mission was to inspire others to achievement rather than to achieve themselves。" Even so, a book does not have to be broody and depressing to express one's critical view of this period - as this book proves。 The sexist and patronizing views of women have mainly been expressed via Cecil Vyse and Mr。 Beebe whereas the more palatable and liberal views via the Emersons。 Moreover, this book also shines a light on the progressive and feminist views held by Forster as in the end, all is well for Lucy - "A rebel who desired, not a wider dwelling-room, but equality beside the man she loved。" 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I listened to this book as an audiobook and I think it was a perfect book to listen to。 I couldn't get invested in the book, but it was fun and amusing。 I can't say I was really fond of any of the characters (although I found Cecil very amusing for some reason)。 The plot wasn't incredibly gripping for me either。 The whole love story of George and Lucy I honestly found ridiculous。 The only real interaction it felt like they had was avoiding each other's eye contact and presence practically the wh I listened to this book as an audiobook and I think it was a perfect book to listen to。 I couldn't get invested in the book, but it was fun and amusing。 I can't say I was really fond of any of the characters (although I found Cecil very amusing for some reason)。 The plot wasn't incredibly gripping for me either。 The whole love story of George and Lucy I honestly found ridiculous。 The only real interaction it felt like they had was avoiding each other's eye contact and presence practically the whole time。 The only romantic moments together were George rescuing Lucy from a murder scene, one random kiss in Italy, and another stolen kiss after Lucy is engaged to Cecil。 With all that being said I still gave this book 3 stars for several reasons。 First, I am a sucker for a beautifully written classic, and E。 M。 Forster sure knew how to paint lovely word pictures。 I also thoroughly enjoyed the humor sprinkled throughout poking fun a upper class British society。 And finally, the characters, if not lovable, were at least colorful, exciting, and funny。 I think this may be one of those books some will love and some will hate。 As for me, it wasn't breathtaking but I don't regret listening to it either。 。。。more

Unexpectedly funny。 A short novel about discovering oneself through new places and new people。 Brilliantly capturing the escape of travel and the priggishness of people best left behind。
